Selkirk Luxx Control Air Paddle Review

The Luxx Control Air immediately feel solid and stiff as compare to the 003. The 003 was very light paddle I have to add lead tape to make it feel solid and robust. The Luxx Control also has a head heavy with more swing weight and twist weight than 003 which makes it more robust and feel poppy right out of the box.

The power on this paddle is not as crazy as if you are coming from a thermoformed paddle. The thermoformed paddles have more power and larger sweet spot like Six Zero Double Black Diamond and the Ronbus Nova R1 or R3. But Selkirk claims use to a new technology to enhance sweet spot in an edgeless paddle. Ofcourse we will dicsuss each and everything later in detail.

Let’s take a look at the features and technology used in this paddle.

Paddle Face: Florek Carbon Fiber

The paddle face of Luxx Control Air incorporates Selkirk’s proprietary Florek Carbon Fiber. The unique blend of carbon fiber isn’t just about strength. Selkirk claims to design this paddle for ultimate control oriented players. Selkirk also claims this new face gives this paddle an enlarged sweet spot that guarantees top-tier performance on every stroke.

Paddle Core: X7 Thikset Honeycomb Core

Building on the success of Labs 003, the Luxx Control Air maintains the innovative 20mm X7 Thikset honeycomb core. This core is engineered for superior power and control, with the maximum sweet spot further amplified by the honeycomb construction. The result is a paddle that delivers a consistent feel on every shot.

The Air Throat:

The Luxx Control Air is equipped with an advanced Air Dynamic Throat, which optimizes airflow and ball control. This refined design ensures a smooth and controlled gameplay experience, enhancing your overall performance on the court.

360° Proto Molding:

The Luxx Control Air utilizes 360° Proto Molding technology. Which is a high-pressure manufacturing process, with which the paddle offers exceptional power with a consistent feel on every hit. It’s a paddle designed to meet the needs of serious players.

FlexFoam Perimeter:

The FlexFoam Perimeter technology was originally developed in Selkirk Labs for the 002 paddle, has been enhanced. This innovative approach involves injecting specially formulated foam across the entire perimeter of the paddle. The purpose of the flexfoam is to add more durability, weight, stability, larger sweet spot to the edgeless paddle and also to absorb shocks and vibration.

Performance Rating of Selkirk Luxx Control Air

Lets talk about the performance of this paddle on the court.

Control

The Selkirk Luxx Control Air is really a great paddle when it comes to control. Comparing it to its predecessor, the 003, the improvements are palpable. The paddle provides an exceptional level of control, very maneuvers on the court feel effortless.

It allows for precise resets and drops from the kitchen, giving players a distinct advantage over their opponents. The thermoformed paddles that comes this year for control like Six Zero and Ronbus and Vatics have more power and poppy feel in them the resets with them are also great but the luxx control win in this category. It plays crispier shots with less efforts. One notable feature is the reduced need for a tight grip to the paddle’s natural control, requiring less conscious effort from the player.

Power

For players who rely on generating power from their strokes, the Control Air may present a challenge. While it offers more power than the stock 003, it may fall short for those transitioning from a thermoformed paddle like the Vatic Pro Prism Flash, Ronbus R1 and R3 nova and Six Zero Double Black Diamond.

But if you are Selkirk fan and want more power I would prefer to have Selkirk power air. This is particularly evident in hand-to-hand exchanges at the kitchen line, where the paddle’s pop factor is somewhat lacking. Although its not that bad if you can generate your own power in your shots. It’s crucial to consider the context of your current paddle when assessing the Control Air’s power potential like if you are coming from CRBN 1X you will definitely feel a lot of difference.

Sweet Spot

The Luxx Control Air boasts an improved sweet spot, a welcome upgrade from the 003. However, when compared to thermoformed paddles, it may still have some room for enhancement. The addition of lead tape can significantly enhance the sweet spot, providing players with a more stable and satisfying contact point. It’s worth noting that the paddle’s twist weight and swing weight adjustments can further fine-tune your experience, ensuring optimal performance on the court.

Spin

The Luxx Control Air maintains impressive RPMs at around 1900. However, it still relies on paint grit technology. This raises some concerns about long-term durability, as paint grit has a history of wearing down over time. It’s a factor to keep in mind for players seeking a paddle with extended longevity.

For Those Who Excel in Precision Play:

If you pride yourself on finesse, accuracy, and the ability to execute precise shots on the pickleball court, the Selkirk Luxx Control Air is tailor-made for you. Players in Need of Enhanced Control:

The Luxx Control Air is a game-changer for individuals seeking a paddle that offers a high degree of control. It enables players to effortlessly execute resets and well-placed drops, giving them a distinct advantage on the court. If you find yourself frequently engaged in nuanced, controlled exchanges, this paddle should be on your radar.

Enthusiasts of Customization:

Players Willing to Invest in Quality:

If you value premium materials, cutting-edge technology, and top-notch construction, the Luxx Control Air is a worthy investment. While it comes with a higher price tag, the paddle’s features and performance justify the cost for serious players looking to elevate their game.

Who Might Want to Consider Other Options?

Power Players Seeking Dominance:

If your style of play leans heavily towards powerful, aggressive shots, the Luxx Control Air may not be the optimal choice. While it offers decent power, players relying on dominating their opponents with forceful strokes might find other paddles more suited to their playing style.

Budget-Conscious Players:

For those on a tight budget or looking for a more economical option, the Luxx Control Air’s premium features and higher price point may not align with your preferences. There are other paddles available that offer solid performance at a more budget-friendly price.

Those Unwilling to Customize:

If you prefer a paddle that performs optimally straight out of the box without the need for additional customization, the Luxx Control Air might not be the best fit. While it offers excellent control, players looking for a paddle that requires minimal adjustment may want to explore other options.

Players with Physical Constraints:

For individuals with specific physical limitations, such as difficulty generating power, the Luxx Control Air may not provide the desired level of assistance. Depending on your specific needs, you may benefit from exploring paddles designed with specialized features to accommodate such constraints.

In the end, the decision to invest in the Selkirk Luxx Control Air should align with your individual playing style, preferences, and budget considerations. Carefully evaluating your specific needs on the court will help guide you towards the paddle that best complements your game.

Closing Thoughts

The Selkirk Luxx Control Air is a notable paddle, especially for those who appreciate customization. Adding lead tape can unlock its full potential, making it an excellent choice for players who prioritize resets and controlled gameplay. It may not be the ideal fit for those seeking an aggressive, power-focused playstyle. Additionally, players should be mindful of the paddle’s weight, as it may differ significantly from what they are accustomed to.
